Technical Assessment of the Fishing Operation, Consolidation and Marketing Systems and Practices of the Ulame Fisherfolks Association

The WEE-SAFE Project conducted a technical assessment activity for the Ulame Fisherfolks Association on August 06, 2024 in Barangay Ulame, Lamitan City, Basilan, with a total of 29 participants composed of association members. The activity aimed to improve market access, promote sustainable fishing practices, and strengthen the association through technical guidance, collaboration with stakeholders, and capacity-building support.

The program opened with an invocation led by the association president, followed by messages of support from WEE-SAFE and partner agencies emphasizing collaboration and continued assistance to the fisherfolk community. Representatives from the City Agriculture Office and barangay leadership reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the association’s livelihood initiatives and encouraged members to actively seek government assistance. A resource person from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform provided technical inputs on fisheries development programs, requirements for accessing government support, and strategies to address common challenges faced by fisherfolk, particularly the need for stronger ownership and proper maintenance of provided equipment.

An open forum allowed participants to raise concerns regarding fishing equipment, sustainability of assistance, and illegal fishing activities. Discussions included plans for a rolling support scheme, coordination with local enforcement units, and a proposed follow-up assessment for potential alternative livelihoods such as crab culture. The activity also featured the distribution of livelihood fishing kits to association members, reinforcing practical support alongside technical guidance. The session concluded with expressions of gratitude from the association and closing remarks from the WEE-SAFE Project, highlighting strengthened partnerships and a shared commitment to improving the economic resilience and sustainability of the Ulame fisherfolk community.
