Cross Learning Visit to Zampen Federation of Rubber Association, Philippine rubber Research institute and Fishery Livelihood and Coastal Resource Management of KGMC

On October 23-24, 2024, the project organized a cross-learning visit to ZAMPEN Federation of Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries and Rubber Farmers Association (ZAPFARBERFA), Philippine Rubber Research Institute (PRRI), and Kapunungan sa Gagmay’ng Mangingisda sa Conception (KGMC). The activity was attended by at least 14 rubber farmers and fisherfolk (12 males and 2 females), along with representatives from the City Agriculture Office and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).

The cross-learning visit aimed to introduce participants to innovative agricultural and fishery technologies, effective practices, and relevant policies that could be evaluated for future implementation. 

On October 23, the first day of the cross-learning visit was held at ZAPFARBERFA in Libertad, Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay. The session focused on introducing marketing and quality strategies, emphasizing two key elements: Market Clustering and Consolidation and Basic Principles of Best Practices. These strategies were highlighted as essential for successfully running a rubber business. After the lectures, participants shared their impressions and key takeaways. A participant from LARBECO expressed admiration for ZAPFARBERFA’s strong policies and rules, stating his hope to adopt similar practices within their own organization.

The City Agriculturist of LGU Lamitan (Ms. Ester Domingo) shared a positive impression, highlighting that the best practices presented by ZAPFARBERFA served as both motivation and inspiration for the participants. She reiterated the LGU’s commitment to supporting associations, farmers, and fisherfolk through various programs and direct services designed to strengthen their growth and development.

Further, the project collaborates with PRRI Philippine to learn the program and services available for the rubber smallholder sector and update on the leaf diseases mitigating measure employed by the institute. During the visit Mr. Maynard Abello of PRRI, presented the advantages of rubber, including high strength, flexibility, resistance to corrosion, and electrical insulation properties were highlighted, emphasizing its potential in various applications.

On October 24, the participants visited KGMC, where the tour provided an immersive, hands-on learning experience. This activity helped participants gain a deeper understanding of effective livelihood practices while fostering a strong sense of environmental responsibility.
