Value Chain and Financing for MSMEs in the Agri-Fishery Sector

The EU BAEP: WEE SAFE Forum on Value Chain and Financing for MSMEs in the Agri-Fishery Sector, held on November 20-21, 2024 at Hall 2, Astoria Regency Hotel and Convention, Pasonanca, Zamboanga City, aimed to strengthen agri-fishery institutions by analyzing value chains, addressing key challenges, and providing financing and capacity-building support to MSMEs.

Day 1

The activity gathered stakeholders from ZAMBASULTA to review value chain studies and discuss key challenges and opportunities in major agri-fishery commodities, including rubber, coconut, fish, seaweed, coffee, and abaca. Research presentations highlighted production gaps, limited technical support, gender dynamics, and infrastructure needs affecting farmers and fisherfolk. Through open forums and workshops, participants shared field experiences. They identified priority actions, including capacity-building training, provision of processing equipment, infrastructure support, and stronger collaboration with local government and partner institutions. The activity strengthened partnerships and generated concrete commitments aimed at improving productivity, sustainability, and market access for community-based enterprises.

Day 2

Discussions focused on microfinancing, financing options for MSMEs, and Islamic banking principles. Keynote presentations emphasized the importance of value chain financing, identifying financial gaps, and supporting women and youth entrepreneurs. Panel discussions covered Islamic banking principles, ACPC programs for small farmers and cooperatives, and the Social Enterprise Development Partnership (SEDPI) initiatives promoting savings-driven growth, livelihood support, and socio-economic security. Open forums and panel interviews allowed participants to clarify procedures, requirements, and access to financing. The session concluded with reflections from participants and partners, highlighting insights gained on financial literacy, value chain research, and innovative strategies to strengthen community-based enterprises and empower women and youth in the agri-fishery sector.
