Training on Organic Farming and Preparation of Various Organic-based Concoctions for Crop Nutrition and Pests and Diseases Control
The Training on Organic Farming and Preparation of Various Organic-based Concoctions for Crop Nutrition and Pests and Diseases Control was conducted on June 5-6, 2024, at Nalamar Restaurant and Services, Lamitan City, Basilan, with 41 participants from 13 associations and 11 barangays, including representatives from the WEE-SAFE Project and two City Agriculturists from MAFAR. The training aimed to increase awareness and knowledge on sustainable organic farming practices, provide practical skills in preparing organic fertilizers and inputs, and enable farmers to develop locally sourced materials for crop nutrition and pest management, reducing dependency on commercial chemicals.
During the two-day activity, participants were introduced to the benefits of organic farming, including environmental sustainability, improved soil health, production of healthy foods, cost-effective farming, and growing demand for organic products. Key topics included crop rotation, and the preparation and application of different types of organic fertilizers such as manure, compost, bone meal, and vermicompost. Participants learned about organic concoctions, including FPJ (Fermented Plant Juice) and FFJ (Fermented Fruit Juice), their preparation using molasses, and their application at different crop stages. Hands-on demonstrations allowed participants to work in groups to prepare and apply these organic inputs.
On the second day, the training covered Organic Herbal Nutrients (OHN) as plant nitrogen supplements and animal protein sources, Calphos (Calcium Phosphate) for soil conditioning, and the use of Indigenous Microorganisms for decomposing organic matter. Participants actively engaged in the demonstrations, gaining practical experience in preparing and applying these inputs.
The training concluded with participants demonstrating the skills learned and expressing eagerness to apply organic farming techniques in their own farms. The activity successfully enhanced participants’ knowledge, practical skills, and appreciation for sustainable
